A new high in new COV infections has been recorded in South Africa. South African authorities yesterday reported 26,976 infections within one day, the highest level since the pandemic began. The previous record was 26,485, recorded on July 3 at the height of the third wave. At that time, 108 deaths were reported; yesterday there were 54.
In November, the Omikron variant of the coronavirus, which is now also widespread in Europe, was detected for the first time in the country with 60 million inhabitants. According to experts, the pathogen could be more contagious than previous variants and impair the effectiveness of existing vaccines.
